Rooftop Solar in Delhi: Net Metering & the DISCOM Process, Step by Step
Sizing, the DISCOM application, the net meter, commissioning — the real steps to a Delhi rooftop.
Going solar in Delhi is mostly two things: a well-designed system and some DISCOM paperwork. Once you know the sequence, it's far less daunting. Here's how it actually goes, start to finish.
Step 1: Size the system to your bill
We look at your monthly units and daytime usage to size the system — most Delhi homes land between 1kW and 5kW. Oversizing wastes money; undersizing leaves savings on the table.
Step 2: Check the roof and your sanctioned load
You need roughly 80–100 sq ft of shade-free roof per kW, and the system size is also guided by your sanctioned electricity load. We survey the roof for space, shading and structure.
Step 3: The DISCOM net-metering application
Net metering is applied for with your DISCOM — BSES Rajdhani or BSES Yamuna in much of Delhi, or Tata Power-DDL in the north/north-west. This covers a feasibility check and approval before installation. The exact portal and fees depend on your DISCOM.
Step 4: Installation
We install the panels, mounting structure and a grid-tied inverter (or a hybrid PCU if you also want backup during cuts), with proper wiring and earthing. The on-roof work is usually a day or two.
Step 5: Net meter and commissioning
The DISCOM installs a bi-directional (net) meter and inspects the system, then commissions it. After that, the units you export are credited against the units you import.
Grid-tied or hybrid?
A grid-tied system gives the biggest bill savings but shuts off during a power cut. A hybrid system (a solar PCU with batteries) keeps power on during cuts, at a higher cost. We'll recommend based on whether your priority is savings or backup.
A note on subsidy
Residential rooftop solar subsidies are available under government schemes, but eligibility and amounts change over time. We help you check what currently applies to your connection rather than quoting a figure that may be out of date.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the whole process take?
The installation itself is a day or two, but the DISCOM application, approval, net-meter installation and inspection add a few weeks on top. It varies by DISCOM and load.
Will rooftop solar run during a power cut?
A standard grid-tied system shuts off during outages for safety. If you want power during cuts, choose a hybrid PCU system with batteries.
Do you handle the net-metering paperwork?
We design and install the system and guide you through the DISCOM net-metering process so the application doesn't get stuck.
