Online UPS vs Line-Interactive UPS: Which Do You Need?
PC and billing counter, or server room? A side-by-side comparison using real Microtek UPS ranges.
A UPS isn't a home inverter — it's built to protect electronics from outages and power disturbances with near-instant changeover. The two main types, line-interactive and online, suit very different needs, and choosing wrongly means either overspending or under-protecting critical equipment.
How each type works
A line-interactive UPS normally passes mains power through while regulating voltage with built-in AVR, switching to battery within a few milliseconds when power fails. An online (double-conversion) UPS continuously converts incoming AC to DC and back to clean AC, so the load is always isolated from the mains — zero transfer time and perfectly clean output.
Side-by-side comparison
| Line-interactive | Online (double-conversion) | |
|---|---|---|
| Microtek range | UPS LEGEND | E² / iMAXX / MAX+ |
| Typical capacity | 650 VA – 1600 VA | 1 kVA – 7.5 kVA and above |
| Transfer time | A few milliseconds | Zero (no break) |
| Output power | Mains with AVR correction | Continuously rebuilt, fully clean |
| Best for | PC, router, billing counter, CCTV DVR | Servers, network racks, medical/lab, POS server |
Line-interactive vs online UPS (Microtek range)
Line-interactive — the practical choice for most
For desktops, billing counters, routers and small office setups, a line-interactive UPS from the Microtek LEGEND range handles the common problems — short outages, voltage sags and spikes — and the brief changeover is harmless for these loads. A single PC suits a 650 VA unit; a billing counter with a couple of machines suits 1000–1600 VA.
Online — for equipment that can't skip a beat
Online UPS systems (E², iMAXX, MAX+) are for servers, network and storage racks, CCTV/access systems, and medical or lab instruments, where even a momentary disturbance causes data loss or damage. The load runs continuously off the rebuilt waveform, so there's no transfer gap and full protection against spikes, sags and frequency variation.
Sizing and runtime
Size a UPS to the connected load in VA, with margin, just like an inverter. Standard internal batteries give a few minutes — enough to save work and shut down, or bridge to a generator. For longer runtime on an online UPS, we configure and install an external battery bank across Delhi NCR, with AMC available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a home inverter instead of a UPS for my computer?
A standard home inverter has a longer changeover time that can restart a desktop during the switch. For computers and sensitive electronics, a UPS with near-instant transfer is the right choice.
Is an online UPS overkill for a home office?
Usually yes. For desktops, routers and billing systems a line-interactive UPS (e.g. LEGEND 650–1600) gives ample protection at lower cost. Reserve online UPS for servers and equipment where a glitch causes data loss or damage.
How much backup time does a UPS provide?
Typically a few minutes on internal batteries — enough for a safe shutdown or to start a generator. For extended runtime, an online UPS can be paired with an external battery bank sized to your target.
